Donut
General Classification
A donut is a type of food that belongs to fried bread or
cake. It is usually ring-shaped with a hole in the middle, but some donuts are
round and filled with sweet cream, jam, or chocolate. The main ingredients of
donuts are flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk, and yeast. Yeast, especially Saccharomyces
cerevisiae, is very important because it helps the dough rise through the
fermentation process. During fermentation, starch is broken down into simple
sugars, so the dough becomes soft and airy. Donuts are very popular in many
countries and are often eaten as snacks or desserts. They can be served plain,
with sugar topping, or decorated with chocolate and sprinkles.
Description
Donuts usually have a soft and fluffy texture inside, while
the outside is golden brown and slightly crispy. The process of making donuts
starts when flour, sugar, milk, butter, eggs, and yeast are mixed together into
dough. Then, the dough is left to rest for fermentation, so it can expand and
become light. After that, the dough is shaped into rings or balls and is fried
in hot oil until it turns golden. Once cooked, donuts are often coated with
powdered sugar, dipped in chocolate, or filled with cream. Donuts are commonly
enjoyed with coffee, tea, or milk because of their sweet taste. This snack is
an example of conventional biotechnology since yeast fermentation is used to
produce its soft and fluffy texture.
